For those of you watching the Rhinelander weather from home, we know you have concerns about our air quality today. There are wildfires in the Boundary Waters in Minnesota and Canada, and even 7 hours away, those fires are affecting our air quality. Please know that we watch the weather like a hawk, which includes current weather, future forecasts, warnings, and air quality, and we always have a plan in place. In fact, there are often multiple plans at any given time, since weather is unpredictable. But even if we weren’t watching the weather, it would be impossible to miss the air quality issue today, considering we walked outside this morning,  it smelled like a campfire and you couldn’t see the other side of the lake. However, we had a plan long before we walked outside this morning. The air quality this morning was unhealthy only for at-risk individuals, so we kept an extra eye on our kids with asthma, and limited activities so there wasn’t as much running. By lunch it had gotten worse, so we moved all the tables in Che’s Lounge (screened porch) into the main part of the lodge for lunch. The afternoon activities were moved inside. Kids could watch a movie in the basement of the Hall, play games upstairs, or be in the lodge doing crafts or playing games. By third period in the afternoon, the air quality had improved so activities could move back outside, but we still kept an eye on our asthma kids. After dinner it was time for the counselor show, which is held inside the lodge. The worst of the air quality issues went south of us, and things are supposed to improve by lunch tomorrow. Breakfast this morning was egg and sausage breakfast sandwiches, lunch was pizza bagels, and dinner was orange chicken and fried rice. We truly understand your concern, but we’ve been doing this awhile and there is always a plan. All of the kids are doing fine, and kids had another fun day at Deerhorn,  regardless of the change of schedule.
