A Look Back at Leaders-Mark Nomellini

Today we continue our Look Back at Leaders series with our 2025 Deerhorn Bears Leader, Mark Nomellini. Mark is one of four brothers who have been coming to Deerhorn for years, and will be returning to camp this year for his 9th summer! Many thanks to his parents, Mark & Mary, for sharing their thoughts about Mark’s years at Deerhorn.

Mark was born with a smile on his face and fun in his heart. Deerhorn has been the best place for our son to magnify his infectious joy. Watching his two older brothers, John and Emmett, go off to Deerhorn Mark patiently waited for his turn. When it came time for his turn he was ready! Years later when it was time for Mark’s younger brother Pierce to join the fun Mark thoughtfully looked out for him as he knew what it was like to be the younger brother.
“Work worth doing” is what Justice O’Connor was quoted as what she believed to be the secret to happiness. The important work of boyhood including connecting with others, cultivating gratitude for the ability to sail, horseback ride, waterski, bike, marvel at the stars, and playing so many goofy good natured games and creative camp traditions is what Deerhorn does so well. Deerhorn has expanded Mark’s world and empathy and connection to others. He has years worth of older boys and young men with whom he has learned from and formed friendships. These friendships and camp experiences have helped shape Mark into who he is today. I see the positive influence of camp in his thoughtfulness, creativity, ability to see something that needs to be done, and his skill at entertaining his younger brother.
We are so grateful that Mark has this summer to enjoy up in the Northwoods. Mark we wish you the best summer yet, together with Bennett, Walker, and Zach. Go Bears!
