2025 Monkey Relays

Every day 7 at Deerhorn is a special day, but today’s was extra special! The Monkey Relays have been happening at Deerhorn since 1930. They start in the lodge with someone from each team blowing a ping pong ball across the floor. That kicks off the grandaddy of all relay races! Every activity in camp is involved, and in between each activity, someone from each team is carrying a ping pong ball on a spoon from place to place. From basketball and archery to mountain biking and sailing, and every activity in between, including standing on your head and reciting Mary Had a Little Lamb. The race ends at the beach, where each Leader has to build a sandcastle over an arrow in the sand. It is a very exciting event!

Day 7 is always a good one because we get to sleep in an extra hour and have breakfast at 9. This morning’s breakfast was scrambled eggs and potatoes. The dining room was decorated with bananas and monkeys, and monkey calls could be heard throughout the dining room. After breakfast, kids had a couple of hours of free time where they could do activities like kickball, dodgeball, or even a movie in the basement of the Hall (the coolest place in camp on this hot day!) At noon, Braden gave a Words of Wisdom in the lodge about the importance of caring for each other. After sloppy joes and tater tots for lunch, teams met during rest hour to prep for the Monkeys.

At 3:00, it was time for the Monkey Relays! It was an incredible afternoon of team competition. It was a hard fought race, with teams taking the lead and losing it again. The Eagles came out on top as Bennett finished his sandcastle first. They were followed in close second by the Bears, then the Bobcats in third and the Wolves in fourth. We ended with an all-camp machine gun run and an all-camp Deerhorn Hall.

After turkey chili for dinner, koogees spent time together doing an activity for koogee time, and then we ended this great day with another Deerhorn campfire. Please note that there SO many photos taken today, the Monkeys didn’t end until just before dinner, and today’s schedule was so busy that photos from today’s event will be posted to SmugMug tomorrow. In the meantime, you can find lots of videos from this afternoon on our Facebook and Instagram posts and stories.
