Our Voyager crew left this morning at 7am with 14 kids and 4 leaders. They were excited to finally be able to set off on the expedition they have been working toward for three weeks, and looking forward to for months.
It was pouring rain when they woke up this morning, but that didn’t stop their fan club from waking up with them to see them off. It’s so great to see a group of teenagers get up at the crack of dawn just to come say goodbye to their friends. How often do you see teenagers up that early? And I think, “That’s what Deerhorn is all about.”
They traveled up to Bayfield, to Little Sand Bay, where they will paddle across to Sand Island to camp for the next two days. They will also stay on Basswood, Oak, and Stockton Island during these next 8 days.
Back at camp, we had muffins for breakfast and grilled cheese and tomato soup for lunch. The rain that greeted the Voyagers at dawn stopped by 8am, the sun came out and the day warmed to a toasty 87 degrees.
Activities continued as usual this morning, though this afternoon many activities took to the waterfront because it was so hot. Basketball became water basketball and kids had a great time playing in the lake.
