This morning was the D session awards breakfast, and it was full of emotion, songs, cheers, and lots of great speeches. The Deerhorn Sharpshooter award for top scores in riflery went to Henry Wolfe for juniors, Drew Bagnoli for intermediates, and Jack Hallinan for seniors. The tennis tournament champions were James Theriault for the 11 and under tournament and Griffy Parry for the seniors. We gave out patches earned for stars, as well as Most Improved patches. The Most Improved patches are our favorite award to give out, because kids are really excited to earn one. How cool is it that kids are celebrated at Deerhorn for improving in activities, not for being the best? And even cooler that their friends cheer and pat them on the back, congratulating them for winning a Most Improved. Even seniors are proud of their improvement in activities.
The Deerhorn Spirit awards went to John Conant for juniors, George Barton for intermediates, and Philip Meyers for seniors. Outstanding Camper trophies went to John Nomellini for juniors, Aidan Barker for intermediates, and Andrew Hausdorff for seniors. We also gave out several big awards for the end of the summer. The David Richey Memorial Swimming Award goes to the camper who showed the most improvement in swimming over the course of the summer. This year’s recipient was Wyatt Isgrig. The Lloyd Richmond Memorial Award goes to the outstanding sailor over the summer, and this year the award goes to Walt Szafran.
The “Stinky” Robinson Knife award is given to the senior boy who has given the most in service and loyalty to Deerhorn. It’s the most prestigious award we give campers at Deerhorn and this year it went to 10 year Deerhorn veteran, Diego Banos. And finally, the Deeley Lyons trophy goes to the counselor who most exhibits the qualities of the Deerhorn Creed. This year’s winner is Craig “Bear” Miller. SO proud of all of our award winners!
For team totals, check out our Team Comp page. Thanks to all of our D session campers for spending 10 days with us. We hope you’ll come back for longer next summer! All pictures from D session can be found on our Shutterfly page.
We have a few kids who are staying over for Father Son camp, waiting for their dads to arrive tomorrow. They are hanging out on the waterfront and going to the Rave on this hot August day, then taking a float boat trip to the Birchwood for dinner.
It’s always sad when D session ends. Many of our staff head back to school and camp is a much quieter place. There are lots of tears shed as the summer ends. But one of our favorite quotes is from Dr. Seuss, and sums up perfectly a summer at Deerhorn.
